Dubai,
UAE: Recognising the important role that intellectual property plays in a
vibrant economic landscape, The Kanoo Group signed a Main Sponsorship agreement
in the 6th Regional Intellectual Property (IP) Crime Conference in
Middle East and North Africa, held in Dubai on November 15-16, 2016.
The conference addressed the recent challenges
posed by commercial fraud and counterfeiting as it relates to businesses in the
UAE and the wider region. It also discussed the UAE great initiatives and
efforts in combating IP crimes with the International Community as part of
cooperation and partnership agreements.

HE Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, the Deputy Chairman of
Police & Public Security in Dubai, and the Honorary President of the
Emirates Intellectual Property, personally greeted Mr. Fahad Kanoo, Executive Director-UAE, The Kanoo Group, and thanked the company’s efforts in supporting such government
initiatives.
Emirates Intellectual Property Association
(EIPA), a UAE preeminent association of professionals who specialise in IP; and
INTERPOL, the world’s largest international police organisation, organised the
Regional Conference, in cooperation with Emirates Transport, Brand Owner’s
Protection Group (BPG), Judicial Training Institute, Dubai Customs, 999, and
Dubai Police.
On the opening day, well known experts and
thought leaders spoke through panel sessions about the: Role of international
organisations to strengthen IP rights and protection of authors;
Regional/national strategies and initiatives to combat IP crimes and illicit
trafficking; Initiatives on protecting Publisher’s Rights and Intellectual
Property crimes, success stories; and Marrakesh Treaty for blind & visually
impaired persons, and its humanitarian dimensions.
Two simultaneous workshops were also
conducted on separate venues on the 2nd Day. The EIPA and Interpol
Workshop had panel sessions on the Role of the judiciary and public prosecution
in IP issues; Role of international private organisations to combat trafficking
in illicit goods, IP capacity building strategies, and the investigation of
trafficking in illicit goods. On the other hand, the Dubai Customs and BPG
Workshop discussed Brand Owners Protection Group (i.e. BMW); Role of Dubai
Customs on Intellectual Property issues; Documents Examining Section, Dubai
Police (General Department of Forensic & Criminology); Economic Crimes
Department, Dubai Police; Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED); and
Courts.
The Kanoo Group believes that the success

solutions that would enhance awareness and apply stricter rules in fighting
counterfeits and piracy, and assuring intellectual property for all trademarks,
innovators, and authors which are essential for the social, cultural and
