NEW LPG ENGINES FOR HYSTER® FORKLIFTS INCREASE FUEL EFFICIENCY AND POWER

New engines have been introduced on several Hyster® LPG forklift models in Europe. The new Power Solutions International (PSI) engines are more powerful and fuel efficient, helping to increase productivity and further reduce the total cost of ownership.

NEW LPG ENGINES FOR HYSTER® FORKLIFTS INCREASE FUEL EFFICIENCY AND POWER
Robust, reliable and quiet, the new PSI LPG engines have been introduced following stringent testing by Hyster in several challenging applications.  The engines are reported to deliver increased performance with lower fuel consumption on intensive drive cycles, compared with previous models.
“Several Hyster® models now lift full capacity faster than any other brand in their class,” says Robbert Wijnandts, Counterbalance Product Manager EMEA at Hyster Europe. “They provide excellent power and strength for general logistics operations through to tough manufacturing applications.”
The purpose-built LPG industrial engines were first introduced on the Hyster® S2.0-3.5FT space-saving series in January 2015, with great success.  The premium H2.0-3.5FT together with the new H2.0-3.0XT trucks for everyday applications will now leave the factory in Northern Ireland with the 2.4L PSI engine. The smaller H1.6-2.0FTS models will also now feature the 2.0L PSI engine.
In addition to the increase in performance, the new engines have reduced noise levels to enhance operator comfort and reduce overall workplace noise levels. Noise levels on some models have been reduced to as low as 73 dB(A) (driver’s ear measurement to EN12053) in ECO-eLo mode.
All trucks can be switched between a choice of operating modes. “These modes allow the truck performance to be tailored to the application and give flexibility for the same truck to do more, in peak demands, for example,” explains Robbert.
ECO-eLo mode offers maximum fuel efficiency with a 24%* improvement when measured in loads moved per kilo of fuel, as well as lower noise output.  The HiP (High Performance) mode drives productivity by up to 8%* with 10%* less fuel than the previous engine.  Some models with the 2.4L PSI engine, also have access to the new advanced ECO mode, which provides a balance between power and fuel consumption.

Additional benefits on the Fortens® models include a more sophisticated cooling system with an anti-clog radiator as standard, and the added option to include an even higher capacity anti-clog part for applications where there is a high ambient temperature, or dust and debris filled operating environments. Serviceability is also improved and camshaft belts replacement intervals have been extended from 3500 to 5000 hrs.
“Hyster offers customers different internal combustion engine forklifts to suit different levels of operational intensity and use,” adds Robbert.  “By matching the right product to the application from either the FT or XT series, Hyster LPG customers will now enjoy even greater reliability, dependability and an even lower cost of ownership.”
Power Solutions International (PSI) is a US based manufacturer which has been supplying engine systems since 1985. PSI has been a Hyster qualified supplier for a number of years, supplying and supporting high quality and class leading engine systems.

HYSTER LOWERS HANDLING COSTS FOR PAPER RECYCLERS

In 2015, collection and recycling in Europe increased by almost one million tonnes of paper* in just 5 years. As the industry continues to grow, Hyster Europe claims that it can help even the most intensive paper recycling operations reduce cost and maximise efficiency.
Solutions for paper recycling industry
Solutions for paper recycling industry

Hyster Cool Truck in paper recycling application
“Paper recycling applications present many particular materials handling challenges,” says David Reeve, Industry Manager for Hyster Europe. “Operations need high quality trucks that are tough enough to avoid downtime and unplanned maintenance costs.”
Materials handling equipment used in the paper recycling industry is often required to operate on uneven ground, for long hours and in dirty and dusty environments indoors and outdoors, all at optimal efficiency. Furthermore, specialised attachments are often required to handle the paper bales which can absorb rain water resulting in additional weight.
“Recycling businesses are no longer restricted to only using tough ICE trucks,” says David.  “Hyster® electric trucks are tough enough for most recycling operations, but as with any application, the choice depends on how the trucks will be used.”
Choose Tough Electric Trucks
Switching to electric trucks can ensure zero-emissions and reduce energy costs, something that interests many recycling firms with a focus on sustainability. With fewer required maintenance intervals and less wear, it may also reduce maintenance costs.
“While electric trucks can have an acquisition price of up to 20% more than ICE trucks, the reduced operating costs delivered means that the investment can be recovered over a contract period,” adds David.
See also: LIFT TRUCK VISIBILITY FOR THE SMART PORT
Hyster is well known for producing tough trucks and the electric forklift range is no exception. Built for both indoor and outdoor use, a weatherproof all-steel cab provides operator comfort even in the dirty, dusty environment of a paper recycling application.
“Operators frequently have to chisel loads out from tightly packed bales on a vehicle,” says David. “These trucks are built for such operations which can cause massive shock loadings to the attachment, mast rollers and carriage. We can even add built in load weight indicators to give the operator reassurance when lifting uncertain load weights.
“In some cases, however, lead-acid or lithium-ion battery options may be quickly discounted as there simply may not be enough power to provide the necessary operating hours each day,” David continues. “Therefore, diesel or LPG options may achieve a lower total cost of ownership compared to electric trucks.”
Choose ICE Cool Trucks
Some of main problems of using a standard ICE truck in a recycling application include engines overheating and radiators getting clogged up due to dust, dirt and debris in the environment. Indoor waste paper stores also tend to have poor air circulation and are often confined spaces. The heavy-duty banding wire is another common issue if not carefully disposed of. It can be picked up and transferred to the transmission and axle of the fork lift truck during travel risking damage to exposed truck components.  This costs businesses money in downtime and regular maintenance.
The Hyster® ‘Cool Truck’ is a lift truck option specially designed to overcome these challenges, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. Oil immersed brakes also help keep brakes and tyres cool in short shuttle or long run applications whilst preventing the ingress of paper debris into the braking system.
“The Cool Truck is designed to enhance efficiency and reduce unnecessary expenditure specifically in the difficult environments of paper and recycling plants,” explains David.
Options include a fully enclosed frame and vented hoods, side panels and radiator covers to reduce the vacuuming of dirt and debris from the floor into the engine.  The ‘Cool Truck’, which is available as a modification both on Hyster® Fortens® lift trucks and heavy duty forklifts, has also been developed for use with a wide range of attachments, so can be tailored to suit specific applications.
The Hyster® Duramatch transmission assists bulldozing applications. Its integrated Auto Deceleration System can reduce brake and tyre wear by up to 50% and Controlled Power Reversal reduces shocks through the transmission and helps prolong tyre life. The Hyster® DuraMatch transmission electronically controls braking, direction changes and ensures the truck operates smoothly.
Choose Hyster Quality
Hyster® electric counterbalance trucks from 1.3 - 3.5 tonne capacity, and ICE counterbalance lift trucks from 1.6 - 5.5 tonne capacity are built by Hyster in its factory in Craigavon, Northern Ireland to the highest quality standards. Strict quality measures and testing help to ensure durability in the most demanding paper recycling operations, with, for instance, more durable paintwork, highly tested components and robust tyres.
Extensive research and testing with paper recycling industry customers also helps to feed the design objectives of Hyster® trucks, ensuring the focus is on what owners and operators want and need. Quality service and maintenance support from the global network of local distribution partners is also key to a low cost of ownership.
Choose for your application
“Intelligently designed Hyster® forklift trucks are tough enough to support operational demands while delivering a low cost of operation,” adds David. “However, for maximum efficiency, we can help businesses identify which truck is the right choice to meet their specific application needs.”

LIFT TRUCK VISIBILITY FOR THE SMART PORT

To improve the awareness of lift truck drivers in terminals Hyster is exploring and developing an increased range of options for truck-to-truck, truck-to-object and truck-to-pedestrian detection systems.  Combined with cameras, telematics and other technologies, “connected” Hyster® fleets are delivering greater productivity and visibility for the smart ports of tomorrow.

Driver awareness
“Lift truck drivers and pedestrians need to maintain proper awareness of each other, especially in port and terminal operations,” says Ed Stilwell, Functional System Leader for Hyster.  “Technology can help with this, but to be effective it must meet the specific needs of the handling application.”
He continues, “Lift trucks, for instance, manoeuvre in many different directions, but often have reduced visibility for the driver, compared to a car. Therefore, existing technologies from the automotive sector are often not advanced enough for these complex needs.”
To help operators stay focused on the load and the driving path, while increasing awareness of people and other machines, Hyster has explored and identified a series of proximity and object detection systems. They are modular and can work individually or collectively.
The first automatically detects objects, with multiple sensors that adjust their range with the vehicle speed. It detects objects while driving in a straight line as well as during turning manoeuvres where the tail of the truck is either leading or swinging. When an object is detected, the operator is warned through haptic and audible alerts like a vibration and buzzer. The driver can then react accordingly.
“We can add proximity sensors that enable truck-to-truck and even truck-to-pedestrian awareness,” Stilwell says.  “This is important as many operations are moving more product and containers without expanding their footprint.  This means there are often more trucks and people working in close proximity than ever before, with increased pressure on productivity.”
See also: 4 HYSTER® FORKLIFTS WITH NEW SIDE BATTERY EXTRACTION SYSTEM FOR VBI WEURT
Larger material handling machines require significant space to operate, needing ample room to accommodate the “tail swing” of the rear end. Furthermore, the load at the front of the truck when traveling forward and backward needs extra space and can inhibit the driver’s view.
Hyster® trucks are designed to provide operators with a clear line of sight and all-around visibility and are engineered to comply with the EU Machinery Directive, complying with CE marking and safety requirements of both national standard and respective trade organisations across Europe. The company maintains that the operator must always be responsible for the safe operation of the machine, but technology can assist where visibility may be limited.
“Connected trucks assure that operators are aware of trucks, objects, and pedestrians in close proximity and then operate at speeds appropriate for a specified traffic zones,” explains Stilwell.
Visibility
In addition to detection systems, Stilwell says that cameras can also help to improve visibility in certain applications, making it possible to view the immediate area surrounding a truck and the load.   To keep operators focused on the load and the path ahead, cameras can be set to activate only when an object is detected and then display an image on screen.
Cameras can be used to assist with container engagements and multiple camera views can be stitched together into one image so the operator doesn’t have to spend valuable seconds trying to figure out what view a camera is displaying.
Telematics
Hyster’s expertise also caters to the ‘big data’ needs of smart ports. The Hyster Tracker telematics solution can be installed on a variety of mobile equipment. It enables port operators to collect data, from daily service checks to accident reports and utilisation analysis. Easily-accessed reporting provides quick visibility to key metrics that help keep port operations running efficiently.
Hyster Tracker provides controlled operator access, proactive maintenance alerts and reactive impact and fault codes. GPS tracking data also helps identify areas within an operation that may present a higher probability of incidents, such as congestion-prone areas.
The Hyster® Big Truck line of forklifts provides up to 52 tonnes lifting capacity for port terminals including ReachStackers, empty container handlers, lift trucks and warehouse equipment. Supported by one of the strongest dealer networks in the world and dedicated factory support team, Hyster® trucks provide low cost of ownership to customers globally.

4 HYSTER® FORKLIFTS WITH NEW SIDE BATTERY EXTRACTION SYSTEM FOR VBI WEURT

Four Hyster® forklift trucks and a Hyster® Powered Battery Exchange Stacker have been delivered to VBI in Weurt, The Netherlands. These are the first Hyster® forklifts in The Netherlands equipped with a new, intelligently designed side battery extraction system.
“When the current lease for part of our forklift fleet ended, we conducted a review,” says Bennie Kroes, Plant Manager at VBI in Weurt, adding that he was not satisfied with the side battery extraction system of their old trucks from another brand. “There were too many issues causing parts to break down on regular basis. On top of that, we sometimes needed 2 people to get a battery changed.”

Heffiq, the Hyster dealer in The Netherlands, turned out to be the only company that could meet the needs of VBI Weurt.

“They did not just offer the right value for money, but also listened carefully and offered us solutions that really added something to our operation,” explains Kroes.

Over Capacity

Heffiq delivered 4 Hyster® J2.5XN electric lift trucks with a lift capacity of 2.5 tonnes, as well as a dedicated Hyster® Powered Battery Exchange Stacker for changing batteries. The trucks are being used for the loading of polystyrene foam insulation materials that are produced in Weurt, and for internal transport from the production departments to the warehouse.

“For the weight of our loads – a block of insulation material weighs about 180 to 200 kgs –2.5T lift capacity seems a bit high. However, the benefit is that these trucks are equipped with a battery with a 20% higher capacity,” Kroes continues.

The higher battery capacity (trucks are equipped with 775 Ah/80V batteries) is not a luxury within the application at VBI Weurt as the company works in 2 shifts, a total of 17 hours per day.

“With this battery, less changing or loading is needed and this saves us time,” says Kroes.

Fast, simple and safe

Thanks to the new exchange system, VBI Weurt has another advantage when changing and loading batteries. The Powered Battery Exchange Stacker truck guarantees a fast and simple battery exchange, and there is no physical exertion necessary from the operator.

Many advantages

The new Hyster® forklift trucks are being leased for a period of 5 years, which includes a full service contract for the lift trucks. The Powered Battery Exchange Stacker is only used intermittently and therefore only receives periodical maintenance from Heffiq.

“Our strong dealer partner Heffiq listened carefully to the precise challenges at VBI Weurt and was able to customise the Hyster® trucks to suit the specific customer requirements,” says Karen Calver, Product Manager for Hyster.

Since the new trucks were taken into operation on 1 September 2016, Plant Manager Bennie Kroes has only received positive and enthusiastic reactions.

“We do not just notice the advantages when changing or loading batteries. The traction and performance are also a big step forward. Plus, the trucks are noticeably more comfortable. If this continues, the chances are very high that we will replace all our other trucks with Hyster® machines,” he concludes.

30 YEARS OF HYSTER® CONTAINER HANDLERS AT BCTN INLAND TERMINALS

As BCTN celebrates 30 years of operation in June 2017, Hyster Europe will receive a new order for an Empty Container Handler. BCTN first used Hyster® products 30 years ago and remains a loyal customer thanks to reliable and “green” container handlers, and exceptional service support, proven time and again at its inland terminals.

“Time is the single biggest challenge at our seven inland terminals,” says Wim Busser, Purchase & Support Director Benelux at BCTN BV. “We must load and unload barges as quickly as possible so they can get back on the waterways to the seaports.”
BCTN is the main inland container terminal network in the Benelux region offering an excellent alternative to the transport of containers by road, with daily services to the seaports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and via Duisburg hinterland Europe and China. The company handles all types of containers and currently operates a number of Hyster® Empty Container Handlers and ReachStackers of different ages, and their reliability plays a critical role in the success of the operations.

“We have always experienced good performance and support throughout the life of the trucks, which is why we keep coming back to Hyster,” says Wim. “We are very happy with the reliability of the Hyster® trucks and have certainly put it to the test over the years.”
Each year the Hyster® Empty Container Handlers work for between 2,500-3,000 hours and BCTN replaces them after about 15,000 hours, or 5 to 6 years.  Throughput ranges from 10,000 containers per year to 100,000 containers per year depending on the site, with intense 24/7 operations.
The fleet is spread across the seven inland container terminals located in Alblasserdam, Den Bosch, Nijmegen, Venray, Roermond in the Netherlands, and also Meerhout and Geel in Belgium. BCTN offers a range of additional services including storage, transport and gas measurement.
Wim explains that the footprint of the Hyster® equipment and double-handling capability of some of the empty container handlers enables efficient handling, even where space is limited.
“To support BCTN operations in both countries, we work closely with Hyster and its dealers, Heffiq in the Netherlands and B-Close in Belgium,” says Wim. “They provide exceptionally fast service support, usually within an hour of a call. The pro-active support, ongoing maintenance routines and fast parts supply are critical factors for avoiding downtime and keeping our customers happy.”
BCTN received its first Hyster® container handler in 1987 with the opening of the terminal in Nijmegen, now one of the main intermodal container transport operations in the Netherlands.  The proximity of the terminal to the factory where Hyster® Big Trucks are produced in Nijmegen made it an obvious choice for BCTN. Today, it is also the European distribution centre for Hyster® parts.
“Hyster® container handlers were deployed when we opened in Meerhout in 1996, the first Belgian inland terminal. Today it has grown to become the largest container terminal in the Benelux where we are handling over 800 trucks per day,” he says.
Hyster has helped support this growth as volumes have increased, while helping to reduce operating costs for BCTN.  Initially, empty container handlers reduced the cost per container moved when compared to using a ReachStacker. Now the company has significantly reduced fuel costs with some of the latest and most fuel-efficient models, leading to the latest order for a Hyster® H23XM12EC Empty Container Handler, for use in Belgium.
The most recent Hyster® ReachStacker was introduced in 2015 and features the Stage IV engine also helping to reduce the environmental impact and support BCTN’s commitment to sustainability.
In 2008, BCTN achieved a “Lean and Green” award, and in 2015 received its first star. This star is given when an organisation achieves a 20pc CO2 reduction within five years as part of Europe's leading program for sustainable logistics. In May 2017, BCTN achieved a second star, which only 20 other companies have achieved, and it continues to explore more sustainable options and solutions. Working with Hyster has helped BCTN achieve these awards.

“Intermodal container transport by barge is not only reliable and cost efficient, but also the greenest form of transport. It easily results in a CO2 reduction of 20 to 40pc compared to transport by road, partly because transport by barge reduces traffic congestion,” says Wim. “We expect inland terminal throughput to increase significantly over the next few years with more containers being moved by water in the Benelux. Hyster continues to be part of our strategy to ensure a fast turnaround in our terminals.”
