Dubai, UAE: The Kanoo Group, one of the
largest family-owned conglomerates in the region, recently donated cash as a
voluntary contribution in support for the “100 Million Meals” campaign launched
by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime
Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The initiative is the biggest food drives
of its kind in the region.
The Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global
Initiatives (MBRGI) aims to distribute 100 million
meals for disadvantaged families in 30 countries in Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe,
and South America this Ramadan. In collaborations with 12 food banks in the
regions, the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Humanitarian and Charity Establishment (MBRCH), and humanitarian organizations
in the beneficiary countries, MBRGI begun dispatching food to countries including
Jordan, Pakistan, Egypt, Angola, Uganda, and Ghana.
“We are honoured to support such government initiative that is in
line with our commitment to corporate social responsibility by reaching out to
those who are in need. This holy month celebrates the values of giving and we
commend the UAE’s global humanitarian efforts in fighting global hunger and
malnutrition,” said Fahad Kanoo, CEO, The Kanoo Group – UAE & Oman.
The campaign is part of UAE’s response to
global efforts to combat world hunger, a major challenge that has been
exacerbated by outbreak of COVID-19 that has pushed millions of disadvantaged
populations to greater insecurity, poverty, and unemployment. The campaign also
aims to support the international community in achieving the second of the 17
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to end hunger by 2030.
During this holy month, Muslims around the world fast and focus
their attention on giving to the charity. Ramadan is the ninth, the
most spiritually elevating month of the Muslim calendar. At the beginning of
the sacred month, worshippers congratulate each other with the words “Ramadan
Kareem!”, which means a wish of a generous Ramadan.
